WebVitalist Materialism emerged during the nineteenth century when vitalist theories of life were contrasted with mechanistic hypotheses regarding the nature of life. According to philosophers and biologists, Materialism understood life as inherent to organisms and a mechanical function that could be scientifically explained. Vitalism is a belief that starts from the premise that "living organisms are fundamentally different from non-living entities because they contain some non-physical element or are governed by different principles than are inanimate things."
